About ButterySpace
ButterySpace is an independent web tool that turns everyday images into files makers can actually print and cut. It is free to start, requires no install, and is built by the makers at DialUpDuo, who use it on their own products every week.
01What we make
ButterySpace is a small toolkit. Drop in a photo, sketch, SVG, or STL and get back files that drop straight into the software makers already use:
- 3D bookmarks. Upload an image and get a slicer ready bundle: a 3MF project file plus a matched single body STL, both in shared millimetre coordinates so they line up in mainstream slicers.
- Rounded STL edges. Upload an STL and soften its sharp edges with a slider, so the print feels nicer in the hand and looks less blocky. Download a smoothed STL, ready to slice.
- Clean SVGs. Convert an image to a vector that imports cleanly into Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, Glowforge, LightBurn, Illustrator, and Inkscape.
- Color Book pages and reliefs. Turn a drawing into a clean coloring page and a 3D relief tile. Print the relief in one solid color, then color it in by hand, both between the raised lines and over the lines themselves.
- Lithophanes. Turn a photo into a backlit-ready lithophane panel, flat or curved, delivered as a 3MF plus a matched STL that ship already standing in the print orientation.
- An SVG file doctor. Paste in an SVG that a cutter rejects and we flag the machine-specific traps (missing canvas size, stroked outlines, embedded photos, unsupported effects) that make a technically valid file fail on import.
- Format conversion. Convert the HEIC photos your phone takes into the PNG or JPG that maker software actually accepts.
The whole point is that you should not need Illustrator, Inkscape, or a CAD seat to get a clean, maker ready file. Drop it in, convert, download.
02Who builds it
ButterySpace is built by Jesse, one half of DialUpDuo (opens in a new tab), a small independent studio. There is no big company behind it. It is a focused tool made by people who design, print, and tinker, and who got tired of fighting file formats before every project.
The honest origin story: we did not set out to make a converter for other people. We built it for ourselves. DialUpDuo makes and sells its own products, and we kept hitting the same wall, over and over: an image that would not trace cleanly, an STL with edges too sharp to hold, an export that loaded at the wrong scale. So we built the tool we needed, used it on our own work, and then opened it up because every other maker we knew was fighting the same files.
We still use ButterySpace every week to make the things we sell. That is the short version of why the guides read the way they do: they come straight out of real projects on our own two Bambu Lab X1C printers (with an H2C on the way), not a content calendar. Because we are small, the roadmap is shaped directly by the people who use the tool. The fastest way to reach us, suggest a feature, or report something broken is the contact page or our Discord community (opens in a new tab).
03Why we built it
Most "image to SVG" or "image to 3D" tools stop at producing a file. They do not tell you whether that file will actually open in your slicer or import into your cutter. So you find out the hard way, after the export, when the machine throws an error you have to go and decode.
We built ButterySpace around the last mile instead: geometry and formats that match what real maker software expects, plus honest checks that flag the problems before you waste material. We would rather tell you a file has an issue than pretend every conversion is perfect.
04How we keep it free
The core tool is free to start: a few free conversions, and you can churn more butter pats whenever you need more. For now, affiliate links help cover the costs, and we plan to add light display advertising as well; we are honest about both. Some guides link to materials and tools on Amazon. As an Amazon Associate we may earn a small commission on a qualifying purchase, at no extra cost to you. Some of that gear we print with ourselves, like white PLA and our Bambu X1C; some is just the standard kit for the project a guide is walking you through. Either way, the commission never changes what we suggest.
We show a cookie consent banner on your first visit and you can change your choices any time using Cookie settings in the footer. A Pro tier with unlimited generations and no ads, plus a developer API, are on the way. You can join the waitlist to hear first.
05What we commit to
- Your files are yours. We process the image you upload, return the result, and delete the files automatically. By default they live at most 24 hours on Cloudflare R2, then they are gone. See the Privacy Policy for the full detail.
- Never sold. We do not sell your images or use them to train third-party AI models. There is an entirely optional product improvement opt-in, explained in the privacy policy, that lets us keep a session's files for up to 30 days and use them to improve our own algorithms. The tool works exactly the same whether you join it or not.
- Honest about limits. We tell you what the tool does and does not do, in the guides and on the tool itself, rather than over-promising.
06Learn and explore
We publish practical, maker-focused guides on the things that actually trip people up: why a valid SVG still fails in Cricut, print settings for 3D bookmarks, adding color in Bambu Studio, STL versus 3MF, and more. Browse them on the Guides page, or jump straight into the tool.
